Global Vision International (GVI) was formed in 1998 to provide support and services to international charities, non-profits and governmental agencies, through volunteering opportunities and direct funding. To the volunteer it offers safe, responsible travel experiences, exceptional training and career development opportunities, and facilitates the ability to make a real difference. GVI is a non-political, non-religious organisation, which through its alliance with over 150 project partners in over 30 countries, provides opportunities for volunteers to fill a critical void in the fields of environmental research, conservation, education and community development.
In South Africa, GVI set up a wildlife research expedition on Karongwe Game Reserve in 2001, supporting the reserve management and land owners by collecting data on the predators and other large mammals, thus enabling management to make better informed decisions on the reserve. In 2007 GVI expanded its operation to the Venetia Limpopo Nature Reserve, partnered with De Beers Ecology division and the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), where we fulfill a similar role. We require dedicated, passionate staff members, that are happy to commit their skills and experience to our volunteers and partners, in an energetic and fun working environment.
Description:
- Oversee collating, checking, summaries, mapping, analysis, reporting of all data collected (with help from other staff and volunteers) - Close liaison with base manager, Reserve Manager and other Research partners - Conducting daily research drives aided by dedicated overseas volunteers - Ensuring the health and safety of our volunteers - Other general duties to do with the running of the research base (eg maintenance, data, household etc)
Skills/Requirements:
Minimum qualifications required: - BSc Zoology degree or related natural science degree - Valid driver’s license with Professional Driving Permit (PDP) - FGASA Level 1 - Field Guide Registered for KZN
Other skills/ experience required: - Minimum 6 months guiding or bushveld research experience - Exceptional people skills - Able to work happily and effectively within a communal living environment. - Passion for Southern African conservation in all its forms - 4X4 and off-road driving experience - Ability to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds - Pro-activity, self-motivation - Flexibility and preparedness to work flexible hours.
