Employer Overview: This 3* private lodge and game reserve is family owned and managed. It is situated near Cullinan, half an hour's drive from the Kolonade shopping centre. This lodge offers a family warmth, kindness and refined elegance to both local and international guests. The staff of the lodge can be described as integral members of a team, and they are dedicated to making their guests feel at home and delivering African hospitality at its finest. Catering to some of the world's most discerning guests, (including Leonardo Di Caprio and Paris Hilton), the staff are essential in making the experience a memorable one for each guest. The lodge now seeks a Stable Manager to maintain responsibility for all aspects of horsemanship, management of the stable yard and grooms, basic medical treatments, equine nutritional needs, as well as hands-on tasks such as grooming of horses and occasional mucking out of stables. This position also requires a good rider because he/she will also be an assistant safari guide when needed. This must be achieved whilst promoting the company goals of guest service and satisfaction, teamwork, and professional performance within the stable yard. Subtle, sophisticated and serene - this lodge seeks a person who will host guests and oversee the daily operations in manner matching the lodge's high standards.
What are the key responsibilities of the position?
Complete management of the stable yard plus admin.
Must be involved with hands-on tasks including feeding, grooming, occasional mucking out of stables (more as a good example to those that he/she is managing), turning out of horses to paddocks, wrapping legs for polo, and assisting with/administering veterinary treatments as well as administration of the stable yard.
Assistant safari guide on horseback, and will now and again be asked to take FULL responsibility as leader of the horse-riding safari
Training of horses.
Social conditions for team members/managers and employees at Horseback Africa:
This job placement is a live-in position because the manager needs to be available at the stable yard for emergencies, even after hours.
Living “out of town” has it's challenges in the way that the manager needs to be happy with his/her own company in the evenings. There are other team members who also work at Horseback Africa living on the premises with whom socializing is encouraged otherwise it can get lonely.
This placement MUST have own transport. The nearest village is Cullinan at 20km away and the next large shopping centre is 40 km away.
Living in a game reserve often means that communication is poor. This is definitely the case here in the mountains. There is limited mobile reception, and internet is very slow. It is therefore imperative that the applicant really enjoys nature.
The stable manager will be expected to do some socializing duty in the evenings as host at the barbeque at times with the paying guests according to a schedule. (This is a paid duty). When off duty, he/she should enjoy his/her own cottage and should refrain from “hanging around the bar area”.
The stable manager is welcome to invite friends to his/her cottage who are allowed to stay over for one or two nights. All tours however are at the STO 5% rate to immediate friends and family of employees.
Living in the bush means that there could be “creepy crawlies” who sometimes venture into living quarters. The manager therefore must not be scared of animals and insects.
Load-shedding can be a problem within South Africa, so the manager needs to be aware that he/she can be inconvenienced by this.
Working within a family business has it's challenges and the stable manager must be able to deal with this.
The applicant must come from a stable background with sound values and business ethic.
Skills/Requirements: Which qualifications will secure this position?
The Horseback Africa company values are passion, fairness, integrity and harmony. The applicant must be aware of these values and strive for the same values from deep within.
Must have a passion for Natural Horsemanship.
Must have a natural aptitude for and truly enjoy the management of a stable yard (must provide proof thereof).
Must enjoy entertaining tourists on horseback by telling them all about the wildlife within the game reserve.
Must be a good equine teacher.
Must have entrepreneurial spirit to start new incentives within the horse department for future projects and extra income. This is therefor NOT a “dead-end position”!
Must be clean, neat and orderly, both in the stable yard and in the live-in cottage.
Exceptional sense of responsibility, beyond the call of duty.
Minimum SANEF certificate of Horsemanship, Level 2 (NQF Level 6) or FGASA Equine qualification or equivalent. Remember that the emphasis is on Natural Horsemanship in a wildlife setting.
Diploma or degree will be an asset.
Knowledge of the game of polo will be an asset.
Veterinary nurse qualifications will be an asset.
Grooming experience overseas would be beneficial.
First Aid certificate.
Must have good admin skills, computer literate.
Must have own vehicle.
Must be fit and in good health. Must have own medical aid.
What type of experience is required?
Minimum 10 years of horse-riding and caring of horses.
Minimum of 5 years of stable management.
